A bony bump on the outer big toe joint is known as bunion (hallux valgus). This is very painful and is caused due to hereditary factors, ill-fitting shoes, underlying medical conditions like arthritis or when there is too much stress put on the feet. Bunions cause the big toe to lean into the next toe instead of its normal straight position. Thus, the toes get misaligned and a bump is seen. When there is inflammation, it leads to a red, tender and painful toe. If you have bunions on your baby toe, it is known as bunionettes or tailors bunions. Bunion pain caused by bunions or hallux valgus is a deformity of the foot which causes the big toe to tilt inwards or towards other toes while the base of the toe has a bony protuberance, looking swollen and turning painful. The tilting of the toe causes enlargement of the metatarso-phalangeal joint. This deformity is what grows into the bump so often associated with the bunions. Bunions can often be caused by wearing uncomfortable shoes although, there is much debate on what leads primarily to bunions. There are several ways to eliminate this painful condition. There are a couple of different types of bunion splints. There are bunion splints that you can wear during the day in your shoes and there are also ones that can be worn at night to ease the pain of the bunion and to help realign the toe. A basic bunion splint simply wraps around the top of the foot and is strapped to the toes. It helps to hold the big toe in a straight position. You will probably need a wider size of shoe to accommodate the splint if you are wearing it with your shoes. Many people have success with bunion night splints. Of course, everyone is different, but many people report that their foot pain is greatly alleviated after wearing a bunion regulator or splint for just a week or so. Most reviewers say their experience with night splints for bunions is very good, and recommend that other sufferers try one. Some very fortunate people even say that after just one or two nights of wearing a bunion regulator, they can tell a significant difference in their level of pain Maybe you will be one of these people. These success stories are very encouraging. The pain then can affect other areas of the forefoot (front of the foot) including the toes caused by contractures of ligaments and tendons leading to bunions (turning of the big toe towards the other toes) or your other toes may begin to curl and get stiff (often called hammertoes or claw toes). As this occurs, calluses become a larger problem and may build up under the ball of the foot, at the joints of the toes or even at the tips of the toes. Care must be exercised to limit damage to the skin by allowing these calluses to become wounds. Bunions, in most cases, are a condition that affects the big toe. The base of the big toe reveals a protruding mass similar to the size of a marble under the skin, and causes the angle of the big toe to realign inward. Lesser toe bunions are rare, but occur on the remaining four toes. Mostly seen on the base of the fifth toe, sometimes called a Tailors bunion or bunionette , these present with the same protruding ball under the skin and forces the toe inward. Although symptom management through non-surgical methods are tried first, corrective bunion surgery is often needed to treat the bunion. Bunion Surgery Different conditions or injuries may cause foot pain and the most common are acute or repeated trauma, disease, or a combination of both. Poorbiomechanical alignment resulting from trauma may lead to pain in foot Wearing high-heeled shoes can cause pain around the ball of the foot including the bones in that area. Meanwhile, too tight shoes may also cause pain and bruises on the top of the foot. Some acute typical injuries such as ligament sprains, muscle sprains, bruises or fractures, may be the result of a single or variety of stresses on the foot.
